Fiber Optics is your friend. The science shop here sells it for $0.50 - $6.00 a meter for regular stuffs. Place a light source (a flashlight will work), run your fibers up to the eyes, and voila .. you have glowing eyes. You can change the colour by putting a piece of heat resistant plastic over the flashlight (or using a coloured light bulb in a lamp) ... or use a red laser pointer type thing for red eyes. It carries light a good 70 some odd metres or more & you can control the brightness by using a lower wattage light source. Also, because the fiber optic doesn't transmit as much heat as regular lighting sources, you can (if you so choose) use fabric or plastic to dim and distort your glowing effect.
That's an interesting idea. The only "science" shop I can think of that's local, although I'm sure there is something more I'm just unaware of, is Radioshack. If I don't get the lights set up by the deadlines, I may do it after (and buy parts online) because I'd like it if I could at least set up a toggle light switch or something and make spooky light come out of his orifices. Fiber optics is a really good suggestion though, so thank you.

Progress report: I'll take pictures after work today, but I've got the Grenth statue shaped and I'm currently working on texturing it and sculpting the face before I bake; I will be doing the horns, hood and the other flat parts that wrap around it post-bake. I am also re-doing the pedestal base. Initially I was going with the 3 circular discs (per Prophecies) but after realizing how much space it would take up (which was a lot) I decided to go for the Faction's look; I have to re-cut my discs and possible some more wood but the new design SHOULD look better. Hopefully I can have pics of the in-progress wood base along with shots of the in-progress Grenth!

so here is my progress guys, i just started so it's super sketchy and messy, i didn't really have time for this untill now because i was working on another painting. I'll be adding more characters around the cauldron later and i was thinking about adding necrid horseman or something who will be overlooking the whole scene, but i'm gonna work on that later. Let me know what you think

@Odinius: I am amazed at your skills! It looks really nice. I haven't used that clay since I was a kid, and it's true as you say; It just won't stick to anything but itself (sometimes not even that >_>) And I really love the kettle you made, it looks so good, I want it. :<

@Draken Burst: How many hues of brown did you use for his skin? Do you work it in layers? Thanks for sharing the progress, and nice para. ^^

@Death By An Arrow: It's taking shape nicely. ^^

@Minami: Yay! You're making some art! I like what I see so far! I' loking forward to the end product. ^^ But I wonder; are they supposed to have the same armour? it looks a bit too different in my eyes, but it might just be me X_X

@Bebe: Welcome to the workshop, I'm stalking your gallery waiting for your progress pics

@stouda01: I like your messy sketch style. Looks very 'moody' already

------

And about my own progress *slowpoke*
I could actually need some CC by you guys!

I've been drawing the pose several times and I just can't get it right, despite even taking reference pics of myself to get the pose perspective right. I need some help picking the angle, above you see 3 sketches:

1. Is so far what I intend to draw, but I need some points on the anatomy, especially the ass-hip area.
2. Is a variation of the pose in a higher angle, I kinda like this angle.
3. Is also a variation, taking it out of perspective and making it more plain.

The apple goes into the mouth, that's a given, and I do intend to make some adjustments to the skirt of the dress, and perhaps even the hat.

I don't know how much use it will be to drawing, but whenever I have problems with anatomy in my sculpting, I always break out the bipedal calculator.

http://www.zombietronix.com/calculator_biped.php

Specific to your drawing, it appears the (how do I put this without naming bones...)...the lower legs are too long compaired to the thighs. The Femur (thigh/hip) should be a tad longer than the tibia (shin). Whether shortening them, or moving the position to sit back over the ankles more would correct the dimensions. The left arm also appears to be a little short on both humerus and radius/ulna.

Love the face.

@Gemini: I like number 1 the best Her face and expression is so nice! That's also the one that looks the best pose wise. Unorthodox is right, her shin is a tad bit too long, and I'm not exactly sure how you want her arm that's extending backwards, placed.
Is it supposed to be on the ground? Or just in the air?
I really like the sketches though, the dress is very cool! And that pumpkin-bucket full of yummy stuff is really awesome!

As for my drawing, the dresses are supposed to be the same, but I haven't done the sketch for the figure on the right side exactly the way I want to.
I'm working on the lineart for the left figure, then when that's done, I can adjust the sketch of the right figure's dress to match the other one.

EDIT: I figured I'd like to enter the Digital Art Medium and the Spirit of Halloween category. So I will not judge those 2 categories, but will judge all the others.
@Verene and other judges: Does that work with you?

Stouda, your sketch is wonderfully sketchy. I'm pumped to see the completed/colored version.

Gemini, like Minami said, the first sketch has the clearest pose. The spooky trees and moon in 3's background are pretty rad, though.

OP, why oh why did you link my progress gallery to someone's DA? : /

It was not the OP, Varene has been busy so I have been attempting to keep the entries updated.

Actually it is quite time consuming. I am sorry I made a mistake with yours.

If there any other errors please send a pm as I requested, I do not necessarily see all the posts, this thread moves so fast.

@Stouda01 Really like the feel of that sketch

@Minami Great to see you here too, love your work!

I made a lot of progress today, the sceduled 3 days for the throne have been reduced by one!!!
Also finished some stuff from the Moa scene (soup, and ingredients)
I planned to have some moa legs sticking out of the soup or a bone even, but felt it was a bit illogical having her plucking a Moa if it was already in the soup.
While waiting 24 hours for my throne filling to dry (can't bake that kind of clay :S(tick tock people!)), I'm going to start on MKT.
He'll be wearing royal robes and a pumpking like crown but can't decide if I should make the robes red(the logical one), orange(would be my first choice except his head is orange too) or purple(he is mad you know).
Black and blue are not an option because there is already a lot of black in the room and a lot of the background will be grey/blue.
Ah well, enough talk, here are some pictures:

I've had a few setbacks on mine, so restarting tonight after some more fabric shopping. Plus bought the wrong size for the corset pattern.... its been a really off weekend.

Started on paper mache headpiece.

Made boot covers.

Going to be restarting the skirt. I changed my mind about the fabric I was going to use.

Thanks for adding me, Verene

I have seen a lot of great things so far. Keep at it everyone.

I have posted a small update in my progress gallery myself.

I jsut came here to say how great you guys are coming along. I originally planned on doing something for Halloween but i completely forgot about the contest; I only remembered it when i saw a link on facebook for something else and scrolled down. Maybe I have time to start my Wintersday one.

I admire the effort you guys have gone to compared to how much i would put into it too ;(

I'm sad. I got papers to finish for this week so I can't get much writing time... and my time's also been cramped with other crap.

Dunno if I can finish for the workshop, let alone the official contest. I was supposed to be almost done by now. Q_Q

I've been attempting no sleep, but things have been very harsh on me lately. Very draining. Hopefully that's over though...

And yes, the story will still be posted. I was gonna write it up sometime/eventually anyways. It just becomes a question of when I'll write it up now.

OMG, can't keep up with posts >_> such amazing stuff to look at! sorry again if i skipped posts <_<

@Odinius: I love, love your stuff! I was looking at your progress gallery and I'm just blown away by all the details you put in your piece :O The bird's face and feathers are especially amazing! And that marbling texture on the throne is so spot on!

@unOrthOdOx: I hope the weather cooperates for pic taking! It's looking so scary real right now! As for your neighbors, maybe if you put a sign/flyer before hand or a sign that says "just assembling for pics and then deassembling after a day" during pic day, maybe you can diffuse any potential neighbor issues with this set up?

@Rends with Tongue: Sorry if I'm posting stuff you already know!

@aerowen: thanks for taking the time to update the first post! It's so much fun browsing through everyone's progress pages

@minami: awesome to see some drawings, but I miss your 3d stuff, too Are you still doing them?

@gemini: pic 1 makes her look sweet and innocent (kinda reminds me of anime girls with the pose). pic 2 looks interesting, but since it's the least developed, it doesn't stand out like the other two although it could end up as an awesome final pic. pic 3 makes her look kinda sulky and pissed I like 1 and 2 the best, although pic 3 as "I'm pissed so I'm going to sit here and eat my damn candy" would also be awesome XD

@stouda: looks good! I can already imagine how you'll paint it after thinking of your last year's entry with the hound

@Kiya Koreena: amazing Those boots actually look like something you'd find in a store :O

@Konig: awww what about splitting it in two (if you can find a good splitting point), and submitting part 1 with part 2 coming after the workshop (like I did with the Wintersday one).

My update:
Post-poning Razah's story until after the official GW contest since the workshop deadline is a week later BTW, the official GW contest deadline being a Thursday and a week early is so weird to me o_O

I've been posting some updates on my Danika costume in my progress link. Nothing exciting really, just trudging along One bad thing is that the costume so far looks really, really, really... really bad on me XD It's very not flattering at all, because I put all the seams in the waist and since there's sooo much fabric coupled with the baby bump and weight gain... let's just say my version of Danika is going to be roundish >_< I may just submit the final costume pic without me in it if the final fitted version is just too awful (still going to be my Halloween costume though) XD

Yeah, I already have the 'announcement sign' out saying this is just temporary for a contest.

Toow so caught up in other things i totally forgot about this. And i also see there is already a 'In the spirit of Halloween' price :P ... not entirely disappointed as pink day took a large chunk out of my warchest, but, as pink day is passed and we move towards Halloween i be sure to let verene know if there is room for some ingame stuff for that price aswell

One other thing i wanted to bring to the discussion, are we all 'again' interested in throwing a little party afterwards to meet in game have a chat and hand out prices ? ... i know it's a bit early but the sooner we start this the sooner I can set things in motion ^^ ...

Last but not least, i will try and see if i can find the time to start drawing, i did get a great idea, but i doubt i can get it done in time, so i'll contemplate and if the first scetches go alright i'll go and get signed up ^^

Thistle Xandra @ That info helps; I did come across enough (I think) about LEDs to know how to make one, but my situation doesn't grant me much ability or time to go to the store and get what I would need -- which is looking to be the case in regards to the dry ice I wanted to get. :/ But I'm glad you mentioned the glow-in-the-dark stuff. I do have some paint that I may use, hopefully it'll do!

Odinius@ I Have 2 questions: What did you use/do to get the glossy green 'liquid' of your soup, and what were you talking about when you said "filling" for the chair? It all looks quite excellent so far!

Progress Report:

So I'm pretty bad about taking in-progress photos, but this is a good time to do so.

I think I'm satisfied with the hood at the moment and overall shape. Tomorrow I will begin smoothing it out and texturing it. I will most likely bake the body, make/glue the face on, put the upper-body plating on, and bake some more.

I turned the 3 wooden discs I had into this (with the help of some not-so accurate power tools, but much gratitude for being allowed to use them!) Canthan-style shrine. I'll be gluing the stacked pieces tonight and giving them a good sanding/filing on Thursday most likely. In the meantime I'll be practicing my wood burning skills so I can texture the wood for more of a stone look.

Tomorrow I begin working on the 2 worshipers (the bodies coming out of the base of Grenth's statue) while Grenth himself bakes.
